Welcome to Cardio-Aalst.be

The Cardiovascular Center Aalst

Aalst is a small town located in Flanders, the Flemish part of Belgium, halfway between Ghent and Brussels. The city is known for its onions, the lively carnival and ... the Cardiovascular Center.

Erik Andries and Paul Nellens, at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwziekenhuis, a medium-size private general hospital, founded the Cardiology Division some 27 years ago. Presently, 18 cardiologists and 5 cardiac surgeons have a full-time affiliation with the OLV-ziekenhuis. The team of the Cardiovascular Center includes up to 250 nurses, technicians, physiotherapists, and secretaries.

Ongoing research in the Division of Cardiology focuses on new diagnostic and treatment modalities for heart failure and hypertrophy, the role of genetic markers in ventricular arrhythmias, the physiological evaluation of coronary stenoses, the prevention and treatment of in-stent restenosis, detection and treatment early atherosclerosis and myocardial cell transplantation.

It is the ambition of our group to provide high-quality patient care, at an academic level and at the same time, to maintain a direct, "private" relationship between the patient and his physician.
